LACY OF CLARE’S WELL
Whoopee! I have finally finished the pet portrait quilt of dear friends’ collie who passed away a few years ago. I began this quilt as a Christmas gift in 2013! Other events and issues interrupted, delaying the project for another year until, finally, this spring I got back into my studio to work on it. Now my friends have just moved to a new home, so it became their housewarming gift. As always, things happen when they are ready, and when the timing is right, despite all my best intentions.
Lacy was a special dog. She came as a young pup to live with my friends when their previous collie had died in old age. The lovely spiritual retreat farm where they lived suited her well, for she loved being free out among the acres and buildings, and was always ready to welcome visitors who came there. She got along well with the two cats and watched over the guinea hens and goats with diligence, herding them into place if needed.
Until she began to go blind… when, despite her poor eyesight, she continued to roam the yard and greet visitors with a great wagging tail. She will be remembered by many more than just those dear women whom she lived with. She has now been replaced by another collie who came as an elder adult dog, less inclined to roam the outdoors and more content to stay with her people. Again, things work out as they are meant to… for Lacy would probably not be as happily contained in a smaller home-place as is Roxy now.
