MAY 1, LUNAR SABBAT OF BELTANE: CELEBRATION OF SPRING

The “Cross-Quarter” Celebration of Beltane harkens the true opening of spring season. It is a Lunar Sabbat, falling midway between the Solar Sabbats of Spring Solstice and Summer Equinox. The Lunar celebrations are: Beltane, Lammas, Samhain, and Imbolc. These are often considered more “occult” or mysterious seasonal moments, for they are not recognized in later adaptations of modern Holy Days as are the Solar seasons of Easter, Midsummer, Harvest Festival, and Christmas.

Beltane coincides with the full opening of spring season in the Northern Hemisphere. The exact date is debated and called by various names, but it is one of eight Wiccan celebrations on the Wheel of the Year. This all sounds like gibberish to most folks, I know, and it really doesn’t matter if you subscribe to the lore and legends of the Craft of Wicca, a Nature Spirituality, Green Witchcraft, or another Goddess-based belief.   The seasons turn for us all, and we can feel free to celebrate them as we choose.

The lunar sabbats are mysterious holidays, often celebrated in large groups with carnival-like activities with highly spirited music, drumming, singing, dancing and sexual rites. Tables are laden in feasts prepared with foods of each season. Chants and invocations are directed to the Moon as a representative of the Great Mother Goddess, or simply as itself, our world’s “eye of the night”.

The celebration of Beltane is simply a celebration of the arrival of budding, blooming Life, of the return of longer sunny days and brighter starry nights. Beltane brings a period when we feel a general lifting of our spirits, an opening of our hearts to the hope for a new and better world. This is a time of celebration when the Earth herself sings with the voices of birds arriving, animals courting and babies birthing, of breezes wafting the rustle of newly leaved trees and the scent of newly sprouting flora rising in freshly turned soil.

So go out and Celebrate in your own way. Create a festival with others, or with yourself and Nature alone. Honor the turning of the seasons and the hope for better things to come into your life and into the world.
